How an AI receptionist answers and books calls for Canadian salons, what a receptionist costs in Canada (Job Bank data), languages, CASL and setup.

Quick answer: An AI receptionist answers your salon's calls 24/7, books straight into your booking system with the stylist the client asks for, and hands calls to your team when needed. For a Canadian salon, check three things before you choose one: that it books into the software you use, how it handles your callers' languages, and that its texts follow CASL.

What does an AI receptionist do for a Canadian salon?

It does the phone work your front desk does, at any hour. On a typical call it:

  • Answers straight away, including evenings, weekends and when every stylist is mid-service.
  • Books, moves or cancels the appointment in your booking system while the caller is on the line, with the stylist they ask for.
  • Answers questions about prices, services, hours and parking from your own information.
  • Hands over to a person by transferring the call or taking a message when that is what the caller needs.

The point is to book the caller before they hang up and try another salon. See what an AI receptionist is and how it works for the basics.

What does a salon receptionist cost in Canada?

Job Bank, the Government of Canada's jobs site, publishes wages for receptionists (NOC 14101). The figures below come from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for 2023-2024 and were updated on 19 November 2025 (Job Bank, checked 19 Oct 2026).

AreaLow ($/hour)Median ($/hour)High ($/hour)
Canada16.2521.0029.00
Ontario17.9520.5028.00
Quebec16.6020.0027.00
British Columbia18.2524.0030.00
Alberta16.7521.0030.00

At the national median, a 40-hour week comes to $840 in wages before employer costs such as CPP, EI and vacation pay. One person also can't cover lunch breaks, evenings, days off and the times two calls come in at once. For a fuller breakdown of the hidden costs, read how much a salon receptionist really costs.

Which booking systems does it need to work with?

The AI receptionist should book into the system you already run, during the call, with real availability. On a Canadian salon's software, check whether the tool books the appointment itself or only sends the client a link or a message for your team.

CallPad books in real time with a named stylist or practitioner in Mindbody, Booker, Zenoti, Square Appointments, GlossGenius, Phorest, Shortcuts, SalonIQ, Salon Manager, Simple Salon, Cliniko, Setmore, Zoho Bookings and Google Calendar. Phorest, Square Appointments, Shortcuts and Cliniko all sell to businesses in Canada. A CallPad integration with Vagaro is in the works. What about bilingual and French-speaking callers?

If some of your clients call in French or another language, ask each vendor which languages it handles and test it. CallPad speaks several languages. During setup, make test calls in the languages your clients actually use, including a booking, a reschedule and a price question, then check each booking in your calendar.

Do Canadian rules affect AI receptionist calls and texts?

Two sets of rules are worth knowing. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • Texts and CASL. Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation applies to commercial electronic messages, including texts. You need consent, you must identify your business, and you must offer a working unsubscribe, such as replying STOP (CRTC; Government of Canada, checked 19 Oct 2026). Keep promotional texts to clients who have agreed to them.
  • Privacy. PIPEDA sets the rules for how private-sector businesses handle personal information in commercial activity. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own private-sector privacy laws that are deemed substantially similar (Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, checked 19 Oct 2026). Ask any provider how it stores and protects your clients' details.

How do you set it up?

  • Connect your booking system so the AI sees your services, durations and staff.
  • Add your salon's details: prices, policies, parking, and when to transfer a call.
  • Forward your calls, either all of them or only the ones your team misses. Your number stays the same. Our call forwarding guide shows how.
  • Make test calls, check the bookings, then go live.

With CallPad, setup takes about 10 minutes.

How CallPad helps

CallPad is an AI receptionist for salons, spas, med spas and clinics in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. It answers every call 24/7, handles several calls at once and screens out spam calls. It answers questions from your own information, including your prices, and speaks several languages. It books, moves and cancels appointments in real time with a named stylist or practitioner on the booking systems CallPad works with, including multi-service bookings, and can take a deposit or payment on the call or sell a gift card. If you have more than one location, it asks which one the caller wants and books into that location's calendar. It also replies to texts and can book by text, sends missed-call text-backs and texts clients on your waitlist when a slot opens up. When a caller needs a person, it transfers the call to your team or takes a message, and your team gets an email saying what the caller wanted. Setup takes about 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a receptionist earn in Canada?

Job Bank puts the median wage for receptionists in Canada at $21.00 an hour, with a low of $16.25 and a high of $29.00. The figures come from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for 2023-2024 and were updated on 19 November 2025. Provincial medians range from $19.23 in Manitoba to $24.00 in British Columbia.

Can an AI receptionist handle French-speaking or bilingual callers?

Many AI receptionists support more than one language, so ask each vendor which ones and test them with real calls. CallPad speaks several languages. Before you go live, make test calls in the languages your clients actually use and check how each booking lands in your calendar.

Do I need consent to send texts to salon clients in Canada?

For commercial texts, yes. Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) applies to commercial text messages: you need the person's consent, you must identify your business, and you must include a working way to unsubscribe, such as replying STOP. Check the CRTC's guidance or get advice for your situation.

Can I keep my salon's phone number?

Yes. With CallPad you keep your existing number and forward calls to CallPad, either all calls or only the ones your team misses. Callers dial the same number they always have.
